Lawyers for US President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday asked a Georgia court to dismiss the criminal case against him for trying to overturn the result of the 2020 election in that state.
“President Trump has filed a motion asking the Georgia Court of Appeals to confirm its lack of jurisdiction to continue hearing his appeal now that he is president-elect and will soon become the 47th president of the United States, and then order the trial court to immediately dismiss the case,” his lawyer, Steve Sadow, reported on his account on the social network X.
“Any ongoing criminal proceedings against a sitting president must be dismissed under the US Constitution,” Sadow added, recalling that special prosecutor Jack Smith withdrew at the end of November the two federal charges he led against the tycoon, for interference in the 2020 elections and his handling of classified information.
The Republican is accused along with 14 other people in the state of Georgia for facts similar to those in the case in Washington.
The request comes days after Trump’s lawyers also asked for the dismissal of the case alleging that he falsified business records to silence former porn actress Stephanie Clifford, known as “Stormy Daniels.”
