Borrell arrives in kyiv on his last visit as EU’s top diplomat

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, arrived in kyiv on Saturday for what will be his fifth visit since the beginning of the Russian invasion of the country in February 2022, and his last as EU diplomatic chief before former Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas succeeds him in office.

“The European Union’s support for Ukraine has been a personal priority during my mandate and will remain at the top of the European agenda,” Borrell said in a message posted on the social network X.

Borrell’s mandate is expected to end at the end of the month if the new Executive of the President of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, passes the European Parliament’s exam in time to take up its duties on December 1.

Kallas will succeed Borrell, if everything goes as Von der Leyen hopes, in the culmination of a gesture towards the liberal family of the European Parliament, which, with the exception of Charles Michel as President of the Council, had not held any top job for two decades.
