Former US President Barack Obama released a video on Tuesday encouraging Democrats to go out and vote in the face of the tightness of an election in which “only a handful of votes” could decide the winner.
“Friends, this election is going to be close. In some states only a handful of votes in each electoral district could decide the winner,” begins a short video in which he also asks voters for help to finish persuading those who are still unsure whether to go to the polls or not.
“You have to go out and vote. So tell your family, talk to your neighbors, make a plan, go to the polls with your friends and vote. Vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz,” the former US president urged.
Obama posted the video on social media after the election day had already begun in several states on the east coast, including New York, Connecticut, Maine and Virginia, although Americans did not have to wait until Tuesday to vote as it has been possible to do so in advance for some time.
The polls do not give a clear winner in the duel between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, which is largely being contested in the swing states, a handful of areas that do not clearly lean towards either of the two major parties and which fluctuate every four years depending on who the candidates are.
The first results will be known in the late afternoon (early morning in Spain) and the media will update their own projections, according to which the map will be dyed red (Republican) or blue (Democratic) until one of the two candidates reaches the threshold of 270 delegates of the Electoral College and is proclaimed the virtual winner.
