Biden congratulates Moldovan president on “historic” re-election

The President of the United States, Joe Biden, congratulated Moldovan President Maia Sandu on Monday for her “historic” re-election in the second round of the presidential elections, which finally resulted in a victory for the now head of state, who obtained 55.3 percent of the votes.

“On Sunday, the Moldovan people went to the polls and voted in favor of President Sandu and her vision of a safe, prosperous and democratic Moldova,” said the American president in a statement in which he indicated that the re-election comes just two weeks after Moldova gave the go-ahead for the country’s accession to the EU in a controversial referendum.

In this sense, he accused Russia of having spent “months” trying to “undermine Moldova’s democratic institutions and its internal election processes.” “But Russia has failed,” he said.

He argued that the Moldovan people have “exercised their democratic right to choose their own future.” “They have decided to follow the path that aligns them with Europe and with democracies around the world,” he concluded.

During the first round of voting in the presidential elections, the Moldovan population also approved –albeit by a narrow margin of votes– the referendum on European integration. While the government, in favour of a ‘yes’ vote, denounced Russian interference, the opposition has assured that it does not recognise the results.
