Trump vows to impose tariff on Mexican imports if Sheinbaum’s government does not stop migration

Former President Donald Trump and Republican candidate for the Presidency of the United States has promised this Monday during an electoral rally in Raleigh, in the state of North Carolina, to impose a tariff on imports from Mexico if the government led by President Claudia Sheinbaum does not stop migration.

“She (Sheinbaum) is supposed to be a very nice woman, they say. I don’t know her, but I will inform her before or after that if they do not stop this avalanche of criminals and drugs entering our country I will immediately impose a 25 percent tariff on everything they send to the United States,” he stressed.

The tycoon has assured that the plan has a “100 percent chance of working” and has warned that he will increase tariffs progressively in case Mexico does not comply with his demand, according to The Hill.

Trump also recalled during the rally his controversial measure to build a wall on the border with Mexico to stop illegal immigration, arms trafficking and terrorism, an initiative reversed by President Joe Biden.

A report prepared by Fitch Ratings indicates that a possible victory for Trump could increase uncertainty for Mexican companies in a scenario in which unilateral tariff increases would lead to a reduction in Mexico’s GDP of between 0.2 and 1.9 percent.

More than 75 million American citizens have already voted early in the presidential elections this Tuesday in which the current vice president and Democratic candidate, Kamala Harris, seeks to prevail over Trump, who with the support of the Republican Party aspires to a second non-consecutive term after his defeat in 2020 against Biden.
