The Philadelphia prosecutor’s office in the state of Pennsylvania has ordered the courts to stop the controversial raffle promoted by the magnate Elon Musk in which he distributes a million dollars (about 920,000 euros) among voters registered in the electoral register after the United States Administration warned that this raffle could violate electoral regulations.
Musk, owner of the social network X and the aerospace company SpaceX, among others, already raffled off two million dollars last week among registered voters in the states of Michigan and Wisconsin. Now the district attorney of Philadelphia, Democrat Larry Kasner, has filed a civil lawsuit against the South African magnate and his independent campaign committee, America PAC, according to the American network CNN.
The US Department of Justice had previously sent a letter to America PAC warning that these raffles – which Washington describes as “daily” – could constitute a violation of federal electoral laws by considering it as payment for voter registration.
Musk has emerged as a major supporter of the Republican candidate, former President Donald Trump, in his mission to return to the White House four years after Joe Biden deprived him of his re-election. On this occasion, it is Biden’s vice president, Kamala Harris, who hopes to once again frustrate the aspirations of the tycoon.
