Trump says he would fire special prosecutor Jack Smith “in seconds” if he wins election

Former US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that if he wins the November 5 presidential election he would fire “in seconds” special prosecutor Jack Smith, who is leading the federal case against him for trying to overturn the result of the 2020 election.

His statements were made during an interview with conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt, who asked him if he would prioritize pardoning himself in the legal cases he has open against firing Smith.

“It’s very easy: I would fire him in two seconds,” Trump said, adding that there would be no problem since he has “immunity,” referring to the decision issued by the Supreme Court at the beginning of July, which determined that he enjoyed relative presidential privileges during his time at the head of the White House.

In response to these statements, the campaign of US Vice President Kamala Harris has indicated in a statement that the tycoon thinks he is “above the law.” “These latest comments are in line with warnings made by Trump’s former chief of staff that he wants to rule as a dictator with unchecked power,” he added, according to The Hill.

Smith was appointed in November 2022 by Attorney General Merrick Garland to investigate Trump’s handling of classified documents, as well as his efforts to subvert the results of the 2020 presidential election in the run-up to the assault on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

“THE EUROPEAN UNION IS A MINI-CHINA”
At another point in the interview, radio host Hewitt asked about the “attacks” by European countries on American companies such as Apple and Google, to which the former president replied that the EU “is a mini-China.”

“They are not our friends. Do you think they are our friends? Let me tell you, they are almost as tough as China,” he said, criticising the European bloc’s trade relationship with the United States and saying that the EU treats Washington “very badly”.
