US confirms attack on vehicles of its embassy in Haiti

The United States Government has confirmed this Wednesday that two vehicles of the US Embassy in Haiti have been the object of an attack by armed gangs in the context of the strong wave of violence that is affecting the Caribbean country, without there having been any victims in this regard.

“On October 21 (Monday) two armored vehicles of the US Embassy were attacked by Haitian gangs. One of them received multiple shots. Our staff in Port-au-Prince are safe and no injuries have been reported,” said a spokesman for the State Department in a statement sent to Europa Press.

He also indicated that the United States “maintains its firm condemnation” of the “continued” violence of the gangs “aimed at destabilizing the Government of Haiti and endangering a future of peace and security for the Haitian people.”

Recently, the diplomatic legation assured that the security forces have been carrying out joint operations and have managed to protect residents of several neighborhoods, repel gangs, seize weapons and eliminate numerous gang members.

Haiti has been without a president since a group of armed individuals broke into its official residence in early July 2021 and assassinated Jovenel Moise. Shortly after, Ariel Henry rose to the position of prime minister amid criticism and after several years of instability. In March of this year, he resigned after the wave of violence that shook the Caribbean nation.

The Presidential Transitional Council ended up appointing Garry Conille to carry out the task of pacification as head of government. His cabinet has announced the creation of a Provisional Electoral Council to organize the first elections in a decade.
