Biden on Trump: ‘We need to lock him up… politically’

Harris says she is concerned that the Republican candidate will try to declare victory too soon

President Joe Biden said on Tuesday during an election campaign event that former president and Republican candidate for the White House Donald Trump needs to be “locked up,” before quickly adding that he means removing him from the political arena.

“This is a guy who also wants to replace every public official, every single one. He thinks he has the right, under the Supreme Court’s ruling on immunity, to be able, if necessary, to physically remove, shoot, kill someone who he thinks would be a threat to him. It sounds like he said this five years ago: ‘I would be locked up.’ We need to lock him up,” he said as the crowd applauded, adding seconds later: “Lock him up politically.”

Biden has stressed that American democracy “is at stake”, urging his supporters to think about what “would happen” if Trump wins this election, and asking for a vote for the Democratic candidate. “He is a genuine threat to our democracy, and that is not hyperbole. This guy is a danger to the Republic,” he said.

For her part, the vice president and Democratic presidential hopeful, Kamala Harris, said during an interview with the American television network NBC that she is concerned that Trump will try to declare his victory early, as he did in the 2020 elections.

When asked what she would do if Trump made this decision, she initially resisted answering, but then pointed out that there are still “two weeks ahead” and that in that hypothetical situation she will deal “with the night of the election and the days after as they come”, assuring that they have the resources, the experience and the focus.

“This is a person who (Trump) tried to undo a free and fair election, who still denies the will of the people, who incited a violent mob to attack the US Capitol, and 140 law enforcement officers were attacked, some killed. This is a serious matter. The American people are now two weeks away from a very serious decision about what the future of our country will be,” he said.

In fact, former President Barack Obama, who cast his mail-in vote today, recalled from a rally in Wisconsin with Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz the chaos that Trump fomented in Detroit following the 2020 elections, while he defended that Michigan voters mobilize in support of Harris.

Faced with this, the American magnate has criticized Obama, going so far as to call him a “real idiot.” “I think he’s a real idiot, I’ve seen him campaigning the last few days. He’s trying to campaign because (Harris) can’t, so they’ve sent him to try and he’s not going to succeed.”
