Former US President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has promised “mass deportations” of Haitian migrants from the state of Ohio just a few days after echoing the hoax spread on social media that Haitian migrants eat the pets of residents of the city of Springfield.
“We will do massive deportations from Springfield, Ohio,” Trump stressed during a press conference in California, where he claimed that migrants are “destroying the American way of life.”
However, state authorities, who have urged “to tone down anti-immigration rhetoric” for causing security problems, have indicated that there are no detailed reports to support the accusations spread by both Trump and his number two for the presidential election.
Trump’s comments came during Tuesday’s debate with his Democratic rival for the White House, Kamala Harris, who laughed and called his words “extreme.”
In the wake of the incident, Springfield Mayor Rob Rue has called on politicians to tone down their words, which have only caused a “negative spin in the city.” “They are harming the population,” he said in an interview with WSYX.
On Friday, US President Joe Biden said the Haitian community is “under attack” and called for an end to the Republicans’ comments. “It’s just wrong. It has no place in America,” Biden said. “This has to stop,” he said.
