The American presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who was running as an independent for the November elections, confirmed this Friday that he is suspending his campaign and supporting the Republican magnate Donald Trump, in a decision that had already been taken for granted in recent days.
Kennedy Jr. presented himself as a third way in the historic struggle between Republicans and Democrats, but in recent weeks he has tried to make a move. Trump even offered him a position in his Administration, something that his now ally confirmed this Friday.
“He suggested that we join forces as a party of unity,” said the nephew of former President John F. Kennedy, during a press conference in which he clarified, however, that he is not ending his campaign entirely but rather “suspending” it. In this sense, he explained that his name will remain on the ballots in most states, although not in ten disputed territories.
Kennedy Jr., who was once a member of the Democratic Party that he now disowns, has admitted that he no longer sees it as “realistic” to win the election, due in his opinion to the “relentless and systematic censorship” of the media. A recent survey published by CBS placed his level of support at around 2 percent.
Trump, who already this week declared that it would be an “honour” to have Kennedy’s support, thanked him during a brief statement to the media in Las Vegas, reports CNN. “He’s a great guy,” he said, before travelling to Arizona, where the two candidates could meet and even appear together in public, as reported by the American media.
