Hurricane Debby has become a Category 1 storm after strengthening in the Gulf of Mexico and before making landfall in the United States, where it is expected to arrive around dawn on Monday (in the afternoon in mainland Spain).
While the governors of Florida, Georgia and South Carolina have declared a state of emergency in anticipation of the arrival of the hurricane, several universities and dozens of schools in these states will have their doors closed for the day, according to the American television channel CNN.
The hurricane has already caused heavy rain and flooding, so the emergency services – which have received a large volume of calls – have had to carry out several rescues in some highlands on Sunday night.
US President Joe Biden announced the declaration of a state of emergency in the state of Florida just hours after the tropical storm hit, granting full powers to the country’s emergency management agency, FEMA, to mitigate the effects of the hurricane.
