Bangladesh PM resigns, leaves country amid protests

Anti-government protests have left hundreds dead in recent weeks

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned on Monday and left the country with her sister, Sheikh Rehana, as protests against the government, which began last month and have already left hundreds dead in the country, continue.

Hasina, who has offered on several occasions to speak with protesters to try to find solutions to the crisis in Bangladesh, has presented her resignation to President Mohammad Shahabuddin at Bangabhaban (the official residence of the head of state) at 12:00 (local time), as reported by the Channel i television channel.

Her departure from the country comes shortly after thousands of protesters, who have taken to the streets again despite the curfew imposed by the authorities in an attempt to reduce tension, have stormed Ganabhaban, the prime minister’s residence, where looting is taking place.

Sources close to the matter have informed Bangladeshi television that Hasina has crossed the border on board a helicopter to travel to the Indian state of West Bengal for security reasons.
