The New York Supreme Court delays the sentencing against Trump for fraud to September 18

Judge Juan Merchan of the New York Supreme Court has finally postponed until September 18 the sentencing date against former United States President Donald Trump for fraud charges linked to the bribery of former porn actress Steffanie Clifford, also known as ‘ Stormy Daniels’, after the US Supreme Court approved the day before granting partial immunity to the former president.

The sentence was originally scheduled for July 11, but finally Judge Merchan has indicated that the sentence against the former president will be announced more than two months later, according to a statement collected by the CNN news network.

Hours earlier, the New York Prosecutor’s Office had accepted a request from Trump’s lawyers to delay the sentencing date in order to examine how it may affect Monday’s ruling by the Supreme Court, which granted the magnate partial immunity for the crimes committed. during his presidential period, in a ruling that already anticipated a slowdown in the multiple judicial fronts he has open.

One of them is related to payments made to Clifford in the campaign prior to the 2016 presidential election, which led to Trump being found guilty of 34 charges in May. The final sentence had initially been set for this coming July 11 and has been delayed for more than two months, allowing Trump not to be sentenced in the summer as his presidential candidacy advances at a good pace, even more so after the debate of the last week with President Joe Biden.

The defense has requested a postponement as a result of the latest ruling by the Supreme Court and the Manhattan Prosecutor’s Office, although he believes that “his arguments are unfounded”, he confirmed this Tuesday that “he does not oppose the request.” In a letter addressed to Judge Merchan, he proposed July 24 as the new date.

In May, Trump became the first former president to be convicted in a criminal trial, although this case has not prevented him from keeping his electoral aspirations intact. The magnate aspires to repeat as a Republican candidate in the November elections, in which he has options against Biden.
