Tribute: Metal guitar of Kirk Hammett and his 1979 Flying V

Nashville.- Gibson Custom Shop and Epiphone join forces to pay tribute to one of the most important heavy metal guitars of all time, Kirk Hammett and his 1979 Flying V.

“There is no heavy metal guitar more iconic than Kirk Hammett’s 1979 Gibson Flying V™,” Epiphone said in a statement.

This is his first “official worldwide release and his partnership with Kirk Hammett, the legendary guitarist of the multi-platinum, Grammy Award-winning band Metallica.

“I am very honored to be able to introduce an Epiphone Flying V today,” said Kirk Hammett.

In partnership with Gibson Custom Shop, Epiphone “brings the genre-defining sound of Metallica’s early albums to every stage with the Kirk Hammett 1979 Flying V.”

This is a meticulous recreation of Kirk’s highly prized original guitar, in Ebony and Purple Metallic finishes.

Metallica fans around the world are familiar with Kirk Hammett’s 1979 Flying V. It was Kirk’s first guitar made by Gibson and the one that established his passion for these instruments.”

She recalled that “Kirk bought it motivated by his admiration for famous guitarists who used the Flying V and because he was looking for a fuller sound. And what a sound! “Kirk still plays the original guitar to this day, the same one he used on all of Metallica’s early albums.”

The guitar features a mahogany body, a one-piece mahogany neck with scroll, Grover Rotomatic tuners with ‘spade’ knobs, and a custom bridge.

The electronics are also top-quality, with a pair of Gibson USA Calibrated T-Type humbuckers connected to CTS pots and an Orange Drop capacitor, plus a three-position Switchcraft pickup selector switch and a 1/4″ output jack. .

A Kirk Hammett logo adorns the back of the headstock. The instrument comes from the factory with a black hard case with a red plush interior.
