Canada sends armored vehicles to Haiti to deal with “gangs and violence” in the country

The Government of Canada has announced this Wednesday that the Canadian Armed Forces have transported armored vehicles to Haiti to deal with the insecurity crisis facing the Central American country.

The Canadian Foreign Minister, Mélanie Joly, and the Defense Minister, Anita Anand, have reported that the Executive has thus responded to the Haitian government’s requests, according to a statement.

“Today, a Canadian military plane arrived in Port-au-Prince to transfer the armored vehicles to the Director General of the Haitian National Police,” the ministers explained, criticizing the “increased violence in the country.”

“We have made it clear that Canada will not stand idly by as gangs and their supporters continue to terrorize Haiti’s vulnerable populations with impunity,” Joly said.

The Executive has indicated that these vehicles will support the Haitian National Police “to combat gang violence against Haitian citizens that prevents the provision of critical services and humanitarian aid.”

“As a firm partner and ally of Haiti, Canada remains committed to supporting the Haitian people in their fight for a peaceful and prosperous future,” reads the letter, which has emphasized Ottawa’s “diplomatic” and humanitarian efforts to the country.

The head of Canadian Defense has also thanked the members of the Canadian Army who have participated in the airlift in which the aforementioned vehicles have been transported “for their dedicated service”.

Joly, in turn, has called on the international community to “follow her example” and “help the Haitian people confront” the violence.
