The death toll from the cold wave in the US increases to more than 60

The death toll from the polar cold wave in the United States has risen to more than 60 after the state of New York reported two new deaths this Thursday amid criticism of emergency services for their inability to respond to the temporary.

In the city of Buffalo, the second largest in the state of New York, the authorities have lifted the ban on driving on the highways, which has been in force for six days, early in the morning, while essential businesses have begun to recover their normal activity.

With temperatures likely to rise in Buffalo in the coming days, the city is now preparing for possible flooding. State Governor Kathy Hochul announced yesterday that nearly 800,000 sandbags are already available for use.

However, Mark Poloncarz, the person in charge of Erie County, where 39 deaths have been recorded, has assured that the flooding will be “minimal”. “Too many people have died”, he has recognized himself. Poloncarz has previously faced criticism for the county’s lack of cleanup, as well as the inability of emergency services to deal with the storm.

In the other states, at least 25 deaths have been registered in 11 states, although the number is not clear, since the victims continue to rise as the states notify their balance sheets, as reported by the US chain CNN.
