The authorities of Cape Town will illuminate in purple, starting this Sunday afternoon and throughout the coming week, the City Hall and the emblematic Table Mountain that dominates the city in honor of the Archbishop Emeritus, icon of the fight against Apartheid and Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu, who died at the age of 90.
“As our city mourns the passing of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the ‘Arch’ (as he was affectionately known), we also want to celebrate the man who dedicated his life to making our country a more just, humane and peaceful place for all”, has declared the mayor of the city, Geordin Hill-Lewis.
“When people here and around the world see Cape Town’s famous mountain illuminated in purple, we hope it will help to remember and honor the greatest resident of this city and all that he stood for,” he added in a published statement. on his Twitter account.
The city has made condolence books available to residents to sign in the Cathedral of San Jorge, as well as in different government offices and on a website.
Likewise, the mayor has advanced imminent closures in some streets of the city, waiting for the South African Government to make public the route of the funeral and the tributes that he will dedicate to Tutu in the coming days.
