The Dominican deputy Miguel Andrés Gutiérrez Díaz, from the government’s Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), has been arrested at the airport in the US city of Miami for alleged drug trafficking, according to the newspaper ‘Listín’.
As reported by the United States Department of Justice in a statement, the 58-year-old deputy has been accused of trafficking cocaine between 2014 and 2017 within the framework of a network that operated in the Dominican Republic, Colombia and USA.
Last March, a grand jury indicted Gutiérrez and several people for alleged conspiracy to import, possess and distribute cocaine on US soil. If convicted, he could face life in prison.
Several local media have indicated that the detainee had taken a commercial flight to Miami, where he has been arrested. He is scheduled to go to court on Tuesday to testify.
