The president of Mexico, López Obrador, tests positive for coronavirus

The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, announced this Sunday that he has tested positive for coronavirus, although he has explained that “the symptoms are mild” and he is already under treatment.

“I regret to inform you that I am infected with COVID-19. The symptoms are mild but I am already under medical treatment. As always, I am optimistic. We will all move forward,” said the Mexican president through his Twitter account.

López Obrador has indicated that despite having contracted the disease, he will continue from the National Palace “pending public affairs” and has advanced that this Monday he will hold a conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin to manage the acquisition of the Sputnik vaccine V.

The president, according to the Mexican press, is part of the population at risk. At 67, he suffers from hypertension and years ago, in 2013, he suffered a heart attack during the protests of the energy reform.

The displays of support for the president have come from different parts of the political spectrum. Thus, since his formation, Morena, the head of the Government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, who trust that he will soon recover, as well as the former president and his rival in the 2006 elections, Felipe Calderón, who, “sincerely”, has wished him a “speedy recovery”.

For his part, the director general of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Health, José Luis Alomía, has detailed that López Obrador is “stable” and with “mild symptoms, complying with the home quarantine

“At this moment, and since he presented the symptoms, the team of doctors that was predestined and formed for a situation like this is under his care,” he said.
