The president of Iran, Hasan Rohani, on Wednesday called the outgoing president of the United States, Donald Trump, a “stupid terrorist” and stressed that “the ball is in the court” of Joe Biden once he arrives at the White House to return to the 2015 nuclear deal and improve bilateral relations.
“We have never seen an American president explicitly announce that he had assassinated an Army commander who was invited in a third country,” Rohani said, referring to the death of the head of the Revolutionary Guard’s Quds Force, Qasem Soleimani, in a January 2020 bombing in Iraq.
“With what this stupid terrorist did, state terrorism was inscribed on the forehead of the United States,” the Iranian president highlighted, according to the Iranian television channel Press TV.
In this sense, he emphasized that “today is the end of the political life of the individual who violated International Law and (Washington’s) obligations for four years” and has stressed that he expects Biden to remove “all stains” on the American record for the past four years.
“If they want to sincerely return to the law and show their honesty in practice, we will also honor our commitments,” he stressed. “The ball is in the court of Washington. If they honor their commitments, we will too,” he reiterated.
Thus, Rohani has stressed that “Trump is leaving, but the nuclear agreement is alive” and added that “all the attempts of the American extremists, the regional reactionaries and the Zionists were aimed at the death of the nuclear agreement, but it is alive “.
Finally, he pointed out that “it is evident” that the “economic terrorism” of the US sanctions “have failed one hundred percent.” “The Iranian people have suffered under pressure and economic war, but (…) through resistance they did not allow the enemy to achieve its objectives,” he has settled.
Tensions between Washington and Tehran have risen since the United States withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal in 2018 and rebounded in January 2020 after the US military killed Soleimani in a bombing raid in Iraq.
In this sense, Iran has announced to date the withdrawal of its commitments on several of the points of the nuclear agreement in response to the decision of the United States, which has caused fear in the rest of the signatories of a possible collapse of the pact.
Despite this, the Iranian authorities have expressed the hope that Biden – Barack Obama’s vice president at the time of the signing of the nuclear agreement – can promote Washington’s return to the pact and the withdrawal of sanctions, considered by Tehran as an indispensable condition for full compliance with the clauses by Iran.
