Biden points to a Democratic leadership in Congress but is “determined” to work with both parties

The president-elect of the United States, Joe Biden, has anticipated this Wednesday a Democratic leadership in the House of Representatives and the Senate of the country, although he has shown his “determination” to work with both parties.

This has been expressed after the Democrat Raphael Warnock has taken one of the seats at stake in the second electoral round of the Senate in the state of Georgia. If the other Democratic candidate, Jon Ossoff, wins the second, the Upper House will be controlled by the Democrats, who are already a majority in the Lower House.

“It seems that the elections (of Georgia) we will leave with a Democratic leadership in the House of Representatives and the Senate,” Biden said in a statement, stressing that “of course” he will be “pleased” that his Administration can work together with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, and the Democratic leader in the Senate, Chuck Schumer.

“But I am also as determined today as I was yesterday to try to work with people from both parties, at the federal, state and local levels, to do great things for our nation,” he added.

In this context, he stressed that Georgia voters have issued a “resounding” message on election day. “They want actions in the crises we are facing and they want them now,” he added, listing the COVID-19 pandemic, economic aid, climate or racial justice. “They want us to move, but to move together,” he asserted.

He has also congratulated Warnock on his “revolutionary” victory in the Georgia Senate elections and has been “hopeful” that, when the recount ends, Ossoff will also have won the second seat at stake.

Finally, he congratulated the state’s voters for the “record” turnout in the elections and the territory’s authorities, including Stacey Abrams and Keisha Lance Bottoms, for holding “free and fair” elections with a “historic” turnout. amid the COVID-19 pandemic and “under immense political pressure.”

Democrats have already won one of the Senate seats up for grabs, thanks to Warnock’s victory. If Ossoff wins, the Upper House will be made up of 50 Democratic and 50 Republican senators, but the casting vote of the Speaker of the Senate, Vice President Kamala Harris, will tip the balance in favor of the Democrats. With the count still unfinished, Ossoff maintains a narrow lead over his Republican rival, David Perdue.
