The Republican leader in the Senate recognizes for the first time Biden as “president-elect”

The leader of the Republican Party in the United States Senate, Mitch McConnell, has recognized for the first time the victory of Democrat Joe Biden in the presidential elections, which already puts him one step ahead of the current occupant of the White House, Donald Trump .

“Our country officially has a president-elect and a vice-president-elect,” said McConnell, a day after the Electoral College ratified Biden’s triumph despite the constant accusations – and without proof – of “fraud” launched by Trump in these last weeks.

McConnell, who will continue as Republican leader regardless of what happens in the races that still remain to complete the Senate, has recalled that Biden “is not strange” for the Upper House, where he remained for more than three decades until joining the 2009 Government as “number two” of Barack Obama.

McConnell’s move is especially symbolic, insofar as many Republican senators have been reluctant to publicly take on Biden’s victory, although in general members of Congress have not been as belligerent as Trump and have avoided questioning the claim. transparency of the electoral process.
