“We respect the decision of the American people and we congratulate Mr. Biden and Mrs. Harris,” said the spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Wang Wenbin, although without explicitly designating both for their positions as president-elect or vice president-elect.
Until this moment, the spokesman had avoided making a firm statement. Last Monday, Wang limited herself to replying that her country would respond “in accordance with common international practice,” before defending the need for Beijing and Washington to resolve their possible differences on the basis of “mutual respect.”
