“Lukashenko’s visit will take place on Monday, September 14 (…) He will meet with President Putin,” said the spokesman for the Russian Presidency, Dimitri Peskov, at a press conference in Moscow.
The presidential spokesman has said that the two leaders do not plan to sign joint documents or hold a press conference and has promised to report on the results of the meeting.
The visit of the Belarusian president to Moscow comes at a time of serious crisis in Belarus as a result of the massive demonstrations in protest against the alleged fraud in the presidential elections on August 9.
Lukashenko has refused to present his resignation and has refused to call new elections on the grounds that he is the only person who can defend the country in the face of mobilizations that he denounces have been promoted by other countries.
In July, the Belarusian authorities arrested 34 Russian citizens related to the mercenary company Grupo Wagner and the president denounced that they were in the country to create instability and riots with the aim of interfering in the presidential election campaign.
The Belarusian president has not upheld that accusation and recently dismissed the director of the KGB (the Belarusian Intelligence agency, which maintains the Soviet-era name) for the arrest of the 34 Russian citizens linked to the Wagner Group.
In recent weeks, the Belarusian regime has increased the persecution of protesters, opposition activists, and local and foreign journalists. The Nobel Prize in Literature Svetlana Alexievich is the only member of the opposition Coordination Council who remains at large in Belarusian territory.
