Dominican Republic extends the curfew for the coronavirus until June 13

The President of the Dominican Republic, Danilo Medina, has announced a new extension of the curfew imposed last March to stop the advance of the coronavirus until June 13.

Medina announced on Monday night that the curfew will be in force from Monday to Saturday between 19.00 and 5.00 and on Sundays between 17.00 and 5.00 (local time), according to the Dominican newspaper ‘Listín Diario’.

In these months the curfew has been extended but with slight variations in schedules, with the initial one being from 17:00 to 06:00 every day. More than 76,000 people have been detained for violating it.

The Dominican Congress approved on Monday a new extension of the national state of emergency, but only for twelve days, instead of the 25 that the Medina government had requested.

The Executive has clarified in a statement that “all the social distancing measures adopted since March 17 remain in force, (…) as well as the process of gradual reopening of economic activities begun on May 20.”

The Dominican Republic already has 17,572 coronavirus cases, including 502 deceased, 6,177 who are still active and 10,893 recovered patients, according to the latest balance from the Ministry of Public Health.
