Tusk, favorite among Polish opponents to aspire to the Presidency

The current president of the European Council, Donald Tusk, is the favorite among opposition supporters in Poland to be a candidate for the next presidential elections, which would imply the return of the former prime minister to national politics through the big door.

More than 27 percent of opposition supporters advocate that Tusk compete in the 2020 elections with the current president, Andrzej Duda, according to a poll published Thursday by the newspaper ‘Dziennik Gazeta Prawna’.

They are followed by favorites Malgorzata Kidawa-Blonska, of the Civic Platform, and leftist Robert Biedron. Both accumulate a support level of 13 percent, according to the survey, prepared from 1,100 interviews.

Tusk has remained virtually untouched by Polish policy since he assumed the presidency of the European Council in 2014, a position he will leave this year and will transfer to the Belgian Charles Michel. On Wednesday, he urged the opposition to “not waste” votes and choose a joint candidate for next spring.

The opposition aims to reverse the results of the parliamentary elections last Sunday, in which the ruling Law and Justice Party (PiS) was clearly imposed. The conservative formation, however, obtained a smaller majority than what it wanted in the Lower House and was left without the control of the Senate.
