Miami, – The Miami-Dade County Board of Commissioners approved a capitalization program on Tuesday to raise more than $ 5 billion to undertake a comprehensive modernization of the Miami International Airport (MIA).
The modernization projects, which will be executed in phases within a period of 15 years, will help to be able to respond to the constant increase in passenger and cargo traffic and to satisfy all future capacity and operation needs of MIA.
By 2040, it is expected that 77 million passengers and more than four million tons of cargo pass through MIA, according to an airport statement.
Redesign the E and F areas of the Central Terminal, expand the South Terminal (areas H and J), renovate the D area doors to serve more planes of different widths and larger regional jets, are some of the tasks planned .
In addition, it is planned to build two new hotels, one of them with a business, conference and exhibition center, and expand spaces for aircraft parking and warehouses for cargo operations, among other projects.
Carlos A. Giménez, mayor of the county, stressed that the airport generates $ 31,000 million in revenue and is the gateway for 96% of Miami-Dade visitors.
90 years old, MIA exceeded 45 million passengers per year for the first time in 2018, when there was almost one million more than in 2017.
Of the total of 45 million, 21.8 million were international passengers.
MIA is the third airport in the United States. with more activity within its category and the one with the most flights to Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as being the largest US airport for international cargo, with a record of 2.3 million tons in 2018, which means more than 60,000 tons additional to those of 2017.
