The Secretaries of Education and Public Security in Puerto Rico resign

San Juan, . – The secretary of Education, Julia Keleher, and the secretary of the Department of Public Security, Hector Pesquera, in Puerto Rico, announced their resignations on Monday, according to government sources without knowing the causes of the secretary.

Before the announcement, Governor Ricardo Roselló has said that he will appoint Keleher’s successor “soon”.

Speaking to local media, Kelehher assured that “now he will continue fighting from another chair, I will continue fighting so that the children of Puerto Rico have more opportunities”.

The secretary, who lasted two years in her duties, will nevertheless continue as an advisor to the Financial Advisory Authority and Tax Agency (AAFAF) of Puerto Rico in the administrative restructuring of the department and her resignation will be effective this Tuesday.

For his part, Pesquera, who will leave office at the end of April, has resigned for “personal reasons.”

He affirmed that he has done everything he could “better than what I have done, I could not do it, if things have not come out as people expected them to come out, you know what: sorry, I could not give more”.
“Now I am going to correct the lack that I do to my family that is not negotiable,” said the official who had been in charge since April 2017.
The Secretary of Public Security has always been throughout his term surrounded by controversies due to his controversial statements about the number of deaths left by Hurricane Maria, which were 4,645, after his passage on September 20, 2017.

Pesquera said at a time in a statement that the Demographic Registry of the island released in June 2018 data to the media that indicated that there was an excess of 1,400 deaths in the four months after Maria, but that The figure is not that of deaths attributable to the hurricane that devastated the island in September.

Under the administration of Pesquera, in October last year the president of the Government Committee of the House of Representatives, Jorge Navarro, as part of resolution 71 initiated an investigation to evaluate the operation of the Department of Public Security. (EFE)
