Governor of Florida praises the strength of the Parkland community

The governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, today praised the “tremendous courage” and “resilience” shown by the community of Parkland (in Broward County) after the shooting committed exactly one year ago in a high school in that population. He left 17 dead.

“On this solemn day, our state mourns the loss a year ago of 17 lives at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas school.

Since that tragic day, the community of Parkland has shown tremendous courage and reminded us how united and strong we Floridians can be to face such devastating losses, “DeSantis said in a statement.

The Republican governor said that the “heroes who risked and sacrificed their lives to protect others” will never be forgotten, nor will the actions taken by the first to intervene.

“We continue to hold in our prayers the families of the innocents who lost their lives” in the massacre perpetrated in that secondary school, and “we pay tribute today to their memory with a moment of silence,” said DeSantis.

The governor presented on Wednesday a safety plan for the schools designed from the faults detected at the Parkland institute.

DeSantis issued an executive order that includes recommendations made by a commission formed after the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, north of Miami, perpetrated on February 14, 2018 by Nikolas Cruz, then 18, with an assault rifle.

The measure instructs the departments of Education and Juvenile Justice to conduct an audit of the disciplinary programs of students in trouble, such as one from Broward County who attended Cruz, who was a student at the school where he committed the shooting and today awaits trial in prison. .

DeSantis also asked the Supreme Court of Florida to form a state grand jury to review and review school safety measures, as well as public entities’ responses to laws designed to protect schools.

He also ordered the extension of the registration period for sheriffs who want to participate in the “Guardian” program of school protection until next April, stating that there are still 50 million dollars available for that purpose. (EFEUSA) .-
