Anxiety, stress and emotional stress affect the development of bruxism

Anxiety, stress and emotional stress can cause conditions such as bruxism, which is the involuntary act of teeth grinding, explained today the maxillofacial surgeon Roberto Rodríguez.

This condition occurs in 60% of adults between 30 and 59 years, said Rodriguez, of the Stomatology Service of the General Hospital of Mexico “Eduardo Liceaga”.

“It is a condition that occurs in young adults with symptoms such as: headaches, muscle and neck, ear discomfort, dizziness, tooth wear and stiffness,” he said in a statement.

The specialist indicated that there are also diseases related to bruxism, including depression, anxiety, Down syndrome and childhood cerebral palsy, due to the severe contractions they present.

This condition, he explained, is difficult to be detected by the patient, so it is usually diagnosed by the dentist and, in many cases, also requires psychiatric treatment.

“The patient must go to the regular check-ups with the dentist to avoid side effects, such as the fall of the teeth and fracture of the jaw,” he said.

You must also request psychiatric care to receive pharmacological treatment, in addition to the use of muscle relaxants and low-impact exercise to reduce the tension that leads to tightening the teeth.

Finally, the specialist said that this condition is not eradicated, it is only controlled and you must go to the dentist for timely detection.
