“Coco”, the most watched animated film in the history of Mexico

“Coco”, the latest animated film by Disney Pixar, a tribute to the traditional Mexican Day of the Dead, has become the highest grossing film in the history of this country with more than 15 million viewers in 17 days of exhibition, The company reported today.

According to the statement, the film, directed by Lee Unkrich (“Toy Story 3”) and Adrian Molina and that has the voice of Gael García Bernal in both its original and dubbed in Spanish, has raised more than 36 million dollars in Mexico.

In its first week of premiere, more than three million spectators went to theaters to see this film, which arrives next week to cinemas in the United States, Chile, Portugal, Russia or China.

The Mexican version of the film also has the voices of the 2014 Cervantes Prize, Elena Poniatowska, as Mom Coco, or the actress Sofía Espinosa, as the mother of Miguel, the main character, whose voice is that of Luis Ángel Gómez, a 13-year-old boy, popular for his time in the “La Voz Kids” contest.

“Coco” is the story of a 12-year-old boy named Miguel whose dream is to become a great musician, like his idol Ernesto de la Cruz, even though his family has “enigmatically forbidden” contact with music.

With the will to demonstrate his talent, Miguel starts a journey that will take him to the “impressive and colorful” Land of the Dead until he unveils the truth behind his family history.
