Trump advances a “powerful” and fast trade agreement with the United Kingdom

US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he was meeting with British Prime Minister Theresa May that they would reach “very, very quickly” a “very strong agreement” in the trade area.

The meeting between the two leaders, held in Hamburg (Germany) at the G20 summit, began with a few words from both leaders to the media and, according to the pool of journalists accompanying Trump, he said that he had developed a relationship “Very special” with May.

“We have been working on a trade agreement that is going to be a very, very big agreement, a very strong agreement, good for both countries and I think it will be achieved very, very quickly,” said the US president.

He added that, in his view, “there are no other countries that can be as close as” the United Kingdom and the United States.

He said he was “going to London,” although he did not specify a date for this trip that has sparked controversy in the United Kingdom over the resistance in certain British social sectors that Trump visits his country.

May, meanwhile, planned to bring together during the meeting the fight against climate change and the US abandonment of the Paris Agreement.

The meeting, the second bilateral meeting of the two, came shortly after the United Kingdom formally began negotiations with the EU to abandon the bloc, which could lead to its exit from the single market.

The meeting included several senior officials from both governments, including the US National Security Adviser, J.R. McMaster, Secretary of Commerce, Wilbur Ross, and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

After meeting with May, Trump’s agenda for today includes, in addition to his participation in the summit sessions, bilateral talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping; Indonesian President Joko Widodo; The Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee Hsien Loong, and the Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe.

Air Force One is scheduled to depart from Hamburg back to Washington at 18.25 local time (16.25 GMT) and, on the official agenda at least, it has not been recorded that Trump will offer a press conference to assess the summit of G20.
