SAN ANTONIO — The wait is over. After more than half a century of frustration, rebuilding efforts, broken promises, and entire generations dreaming of this moment, the New York Knicks are NBA champions once again.
New York City’s most iconic franchise defeated the San Antonio Spurs 94–90 on Saturday night in Game 5 of the NBA Finals, securing their first championship since 1973 and the third in the organization’s history.
The hero of the night was, once again, Jalen Brunson.
The New York point guard delivered a historic 45-point performance—including an explosive showing in the fourth quarter that allowed the Knicks to overcome a ten-point deficit and clinch the series 4–1. His performance also earned him the Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.
Brunson writes his name in history
When New York needed him most, Brunson stepped up like a true superstar.
The Knicks trailed by double digits at several points during the game and faced foul trouble among some of their key players. Yet, Brunson took command of the offense.
With less than eight minutes remaining, New York was down 83–73. From that moment on, Brunson scored ten consecutive points to tie the game and completely shift the momentum. Later, he hit the basket that gave the Knicks the lead for good.
The guard finished with 45 points, setting a franchise record for a clinching game in the NBA Finals.
A series defined by close finishes
Although the overall result was 4–1, the Finals were far from a cakewalk for New York.
All five games were extremely competitive and decided by narrow margins. The Spurs held the lead in several games, including the historic collapse in Game 4, when they squandered a 29-point advantage—one of the most shocking comebacks in Finals history.
The Knicks’ experience ultimately prevailed in the decisive moments.
New York’s dream comes true
For millions of fans, this victory represents far more than just a championship.
The Knicks hadn’t won a title since the 1972–73 season. For decades, the franchise was the subject of mockery, disappointment, and mediocre seasons. However, under the guidance of Mike Brown and led by Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, Mikal Bridges, Josh Hart, and OG Anunoby, the team managed to craft one of the most memorable campaigns in recent NBA history.
