Greenland’s Prime Minister to Speak with the US, but Insists No One Will “Seize” the Territory

Greenland’s Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, stated on Monday that his government is trying to “open a dialogue” with the United States, but that this “presupposes respect,” and that this territory, autonomous but belonging to Denmark, makes its own decisions and no one will “seize it,” while the occupant of the White House, Donald Trump, has redoubled his insistence on claiming the large Arctic island for Washington.

“We are intensifying our efforts to open a dialogue through the appropriate diplomatic and political channels. But I must also make it clear that dialogue presupposes respect,” Nielsen said in a Facebook post, in which he emphasized that “Greenland stands firm.”

In the post, the leader argued that this territory cannot and should not be compared to Venezuela or other countries dominated by chaos and dictatorship,” following the US military incursion on Saturday to capture President Nicolás Maduro, an event after which Trump projected multiple territorial ambitions in statements to the press, including, once again, the Arctic island.

“We are an open and democratic society with strong institutions. Our decisions are made here. Greenland is our country,” Nielsen asserted in this context, before adding that “no one is coming to seize it.”

In recent days, Donald Trump has again insisted that the United States must annex this vast island territory for reasons of “national security,” although the authorities of Denmark and Greenland have demanded that the American threats cease, appealing to the fact that Copenhagen is a historically close ally of Washington and that the Arctic island “is not for sale.”
