Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene announces she will resign in January after falling out with Trump

The US president celebrates her resignation as “great news,” downplays the spat, and wishes her luck in the future

Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, a key legislative supporter during Donald Trump’s first term and, at her peak, a pillar of the MAGA (Make America Great Again) movement, has announced she will resign on January 5 after the US president withdrew his support for her insistence on releasing documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case.

“Defending American women who were raped at 14, trafficked, and exploited by rich and powerful men should not result in me being called a traitor or receiving threats from the President of the United States, for whom I fought,” Greene wrote in a letter published on the social media platform X.

The Georgia representative criticized the White House occupant and the Republican Party for the direction of the legislative session, highlighting the more than 40-day government shutdown during which American citizens had to “endure a disgusting political drama from both parties.”

Greene emphasized her “loyalty” to Donald Trump’s project, but stated that this “must be mutual,” after the Republican leader called her a “traitor,” “lunatic,” and “crazy” and withdrew his support, justifying it by saying she had little chance of being re-elected to Congress.

Trump also accused Greene of betraying the principles of the Republican Party and going over to the “radical left” before declaring himself convinced that “the wonderful, conservative people” of his state “are considering challenging her in a primary election” because “she’s also got them fed up with her histrionics.”

The congresswoman pointed out that all the criticism “has to do with the Epstein case,” referring to her support for the full release of documents related to the prostitution ring led by the late businessman and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and his ties to the US president.

The Republican has criticized Trump and opposed actions such as the bombing of Iran and the health policy during the government shutdown caused by the parliamentary paralysis.

TRUMP CELEBRATES RESIGNATION AS “GREAT NEWS FOR THE COUNTRY”

Trump hasn’t elaborated much on his reaction to Greene’s resignation beyond describing the congresswoman’s departure as “great news for the country,” though he generally downplayed their clash.

The US president acknowledged to ABC News’ White House correspondent that Greene didn’t inform him of her resignation before announcing it, “but it doesn’t matter.”

“I think she should be happy in life,” the president concluded regarding the soon-to-be former congresswoman before suggesting that she was the sole instigator of the spat between them and emphasizing that he has no intention of speaking with Greene, whom he ended by wishing the best of luck.
